Job Description

Job Title                Sports and Fitness Assistant

Campus:                Mauritius Branch Campus

Reporting to:         Head of Counselling Wellbeing Service

         

 

Overall Purpose

 

The postholder will work closely and support the Sports Officer in delivering a high-quality sports programme for students and staff, while also taking responsibility for the day-to-day operations, safety and customer service of the campus gym.

 

 

Principle Duties

 

  • Manage daily gym operations, ensuring equipment is clean, safe, and functional through regular inspections and prompt reporting of faults or safety concerns.
  • Support gym users by providing inductions, guidance, and responding to enquiries about services in a friendly and inclusive manner.
  • Deliver a range of fitness services, including group exercise classes, small group instruction, fitness assessments, guidance on exercise techniques, posture and injury prevention.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle habits and assist with fitness-related events and initiatives that encourage participation from students and staff.
  • Assist in coordinating competitive sports activities, including team training, travel logistics, match officials, and competition entries for both student and non-student events.
  • Support the supervision and development of casual and part-time sports coaches to ensure effective delivery of fixtures and programmes.
  • Help implement and manage intramural leagues, competitions, and events that engage both students and staff.
  • Assist with organisation of taster sessions, induction events, and recreational activities to encourage participation among new students.
  • Contribute to the administration of coach and official education programmes, as well as holiday play schemes, after-school activities, and coaching initiatives.
  • Maintain high standards of customer care, ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, and oversee the upkeep and safety checks of sports equipment and grounds.
  • Act as a designated first aider, providing initial support in case of injury or medical emergencies, and ensuring appropriate procedures are followed.
  • Conduct satisfaction surveys to gather feedback from gym users and sports programme participants, helping to assess service quality, identify areas for improvement, and inform future planning and decision-making.
  • Ensure all sporting equipment and grounds are always maintained in a spotless state and condition.
    • Other tasks that may be required by the Head of Wellbeing Counselling Service with particular reference to major events such as examination, invigilation and graduation ceremonies, when all campus staff are expected to participate.

 

Other Duties:

 

  • As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and amended in consultation with the post-holder
  • The post-holder will carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager.

 

Flexibility:  

 

Please note that given the need for flexibility in order to meet the changing requirements, the duties of this post and the role of the post holder may be changed after consultation.

 

 

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

 

Job Title:  Sports and Fitness Assistant

Selection Criteria:

Education / Qualifications / Experience– Essential

 

  • Degree or extensive experience of coaching/fitness to a wide range of users
  • Coaching qualification
  • First Aid trained
  • Experience working in a fitness suite environment
  • Experience of working with a diverse range of people delivering a high standard of customer care.

 

Skills / Knowledge – Essential

 

  • Good inter-personal skills and the experience of working collaboratively with colleagues and participants to deliver a high-quality service.
  • Excellent customer care abilities, demonstrating a friendly, approachable, and responsive attitude.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, including ability to delivering coaching sessions and provide clear guidance to individuals and groups.
  • Good administration and organisational skills
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of a customer-focused service
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety practices relevant to sports and fitness environments.
