JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title:            Maintenance Technician

Campus:             Mauritius

Reporting to:      Chief Operating Officer

Liaises with:      Facilities Team, Cleaning, Security, Engineering, and other contractors, external suppliers.                 

 

Overall Purpose:      

The Facilities Department manages the Maintenance, Cleaning, Security/Fire and all associated M&E services. The principal role of the Maintenance Technician will be to ensure that the required standards are maintained on University premises and to provide technical support to enable the Facilities department to function effectively and efficiently. The goal is to maintain the building and common areas in the best possible condition, with a particular focus on the maintenance and repair of air conditioning systems.

 

Principal Duties:

 

  • Conduct routine and emergency servicing, diagnostics, and repairs of air conditioning systems to ensure consistent performance, reliability, and energy efficiency.
  • Under the supervision of the Facilities Officer, the Maintenance Technician will liaise with building and M&E contractors to follow through on approved work, assist tradespeople with electrical, plumbing or HVAC repairs, with a particular emphasis on air conditioning systems.
  • In collaboration with the Facilities Team, the Maintenance Technician will operate and manage energy, irrigation and waste management processes.
  • Carry out daily walk rounds, ensuring the building is in good order and hazard free and identifying required remedial actions.
  • Assist the Facilities Team to monitor service standards in areas including lecture theatres, meeting rooms, classrooms, IT Labs cleaning and rest rooms including recommending improvements that could be made to the cleaning and engineering services.
  • Manage key, lock changes to offices, door closers including ordering of supplies and repairs of same.
  • Undertake daily operation and maintenance of the sewage treatment plant and irrigation tanks, domestic and fire pumps.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks including light repairs, paint touch ups, and filling gaps or cracks on walls, columns and floors.
  • Ensure effective monthly cleaning of roofs, keeping all drain clear from debris, leaves etc.
  • Undertake troubleshooting and mandatory regular test for fire detectors and fire Alarms.
  • Secure and maintain all hand and power tools and technical items in good order and in a ready to use state.

 

 

Other Duties:

  • As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and amended in consultation with the post-holder
  • The post-holder will carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager.

 

 

Flexibility

Please note that given the need for flexibility in order to meet the changing requirements, the duties/location of this post and the role of the post holder may be changed after consultation.

 

Requirements and skills

  • Proven experience as maintenance technician, preferably with a focus on HVAC systems
  • Strong knowledge of air conditioning systems, including installation, maintenance, and repair of split units and HVAC systems
  • Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing and other systems
  • Knowledge of general maintenance processes and methods
  • Working knowledge of tools, common appliances and devices
  • Manual dexterity and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail to ensure that all jobs are completed in an exemplary manner and any potential hazards or warning signs of problems are not overlooked
  • Good physical condition and strength with a willingness to work overtime
  • Certificate in HVAC or electrical or plumbing or building maintenance technology or relevant field will be a plus
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with employees and contractors in a pleasant manner
  • Must be able to communicate in English
