Reporting to the Group Chief Commercial & Supply Chain Officer, the role ensures the organisation operates within legal and regulatory frameworks, mitigates legal risks, and ensures compliance is clearly defined, monitored, and demonstrable across all functions.
The role combines Legal & Litigation coordination with Compliance oversight, including acting as the Data Protection Officer (DPO), ensuring that risks are identified early and escalated appropriately.
What you will be doing:
Legal & Litigation Management
- Liaise with Ciel Legal Team and external counsel on all litigation and legal matters
- Build and maintain structured litigation files (chronology, documents, evidence)
- Monitor ongoing cases, timelines, risks, and legal exposure
- Coordinate responses to legal complaints to minimise litigation risk
Contract & Legal Risk Management
- Review, draft, and vet contracts, SLAs, MOUs, and agreements
- Ensure proper legal clauses (liability, indemnity, termination, dispute resolution)
- Provide guidance on contractual risks and obligations
- Vet internal documents with legal implications
Complaint Handling (Legal Perspective)
- Review complaints with potential legal exposure
- Guide responses to avoid legal admissions or escalation
- Support teams in managing sensitive cases
Regulatory & Compliance Oversight
- Identify and interpret applicable laws and regulations affecting hospital operations
- Maintain a Compliance Obligations Register
- Define what compliance means in practical terms for each function
- Ensure legal requirements are translated into organisational expectations
Compliance Monitoring & Assurance
- Develop and implement a structured compliance monitoring plan
- Conduct independent compliance checks (not operational audits)
- Verify that controls exist and are functioning across departments
- Provide compliance assurance reports to management
Escalation & Governance
- Identify and escalate compliance gaps and risks to EXCO
- Track corrective actions and ensure closure
- Highlight trends, repeat issues, and regulatory exposure
Data Protection Officer (DPO) Responsibilities
- Act as DPO in accordance with Mauritian law
- Monitor compliance with data protection requirements across the organisation
- Advise on lawful processing, retention, access, and data sharing
- Oversee DPIAs and data protection governance
- Manage data breach assessment and notification processes
- Maintain breach registers and monitor trends
- Act as contact point with the Data Protection Commissioner
- Develop and deliver data protection awareness and training programmes across the organisation
- Ensure all relevant staff receive appropriate training based on their roles (clinical, administrative, IT, etc.)
- Maintain records of data protection training, attendance, and completion for audit and regulatory purposes
Advisory Role (Non-Operational)
- Advise on legal and compliance implications of new projects and systems
- Support compliance-by-design in new initiatives
- Provide guidance without owning operational delivery
What are we looking for:
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, Business Law, Compliance, or related field
- Additional certification in Compliance, Risk, or Data Protection is an advantage
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in legal, compliance, audit, or governance roles
- Experience in healthcare or regulated environment is a strong advantage
- Exposure to contract management, complaints handling, or litigation coordination
- Practical experience in data protection / privacy frameworks preferred.
- Good understanding of Mauritian legal and regulatory environment, Data Protection Act and privacy principles, Contract law and legal documentation and Compliance monitoring and governance frameworks
- Ability to interpret legal requirements into practical actions, review contracts and identify key risks, conduct structured compliance checks and maintain registers and documentation (compliance, litigation, data protection)
- Professional certifications in Compliance or Data Protection are an added advantage
