The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for promoting a positive health and safety culture within the organization, ensuring compliance with all national and local health and safety legislation, and developing and implementing effective safety management systems.
Job Summary: The role of a Health and Safety Officer involves identifying potential hazards, assessing risks, implementing control measures, providing training, and investigating incidents to continuously improve workplace safety performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, review, and update health and safety policies, procedures, and guidelines in line with current legislation (e.g., OSHA, local regulations) and industry best practices.
- Ensure the highest safety compliance standards and a healthy working environment for all personnel.
- Communicate safety policies and procedures effectively to all levels of the organization.
- Conduct regular and thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards in all areas of the workplace (e.g., equipment, processes, materials, environment).
- Determine ways of reducing risks and implement effective preventative measures and control strategies.
- Advise on and enforce the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Perform routine and ad-hoc safety inspections and audits of premises, equipment, and work activities to ensure adherence to safety regulations and internal protocols.
- Identify non-compliance issues and unsafe acts or conditions and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of all inspections and audits.
- Initiate, organize, and deliver health and safety training programs for employees and management on various safety-related topics (e.g., fire safety, hazardous material handling, emergency procedures, manual handling, use of machinery).
- Promote a strong safety culture through campaigns, workshops, and continuous communication.
- Ensure all employees are aware of their legal duties and responsibilities regarding health and safety.
- Investigate all workplace accidents, incidents, and near-miss events to determine root causes.
- Prepare detailed investigation reports and recommend corrective and preventive measures to avoid recurrence.
- Liaise with relevant authorities (e.g., regulatory bodies, insurance companies) regarding incident reporting and claims.
- Stay updated on emerging health and safety trends, regulations, and best practices.
- Ensure the organization's compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and standards.
- Maintain and verify injury logs and other required safety documentation.
- Coordinate and conduct emergency drills to ensure preparedness.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, managers, supervisors, and employees to promote safety initiatives and integrate safety practices into daily operations.
- Liaise with external organizations, such as government bodies, safety organizations, and trade unions.
- Act as a point of contact for all health and safety inquiries and concerns.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience (typically 4+ years) as a Health and Safety Officer or in a similar role.
- Experience in conducting risk assessments and incident investigations.
- Knowledge of specific industry hazards and applicable safety legislation (Distribution)
