About the Role
We are seeking a highly competent and experienced Senior Accountant to join our finance team within a dynamic retail environment. The successful candidate will oversee the full accounting function, including payroll management, financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls.
This role requires strong analytical capability, leadership skills, and the ability to manage confidential financial and payroll information with the highest level of integrity.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Control
- Review and assist in monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
- Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end closing
- Monitor and reconcile general ledger accounts (bank, debtors, creditors, inventory, intercompany, etc.)
- Review and validate accounting entries to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Ensure audit files are being prepared and audit is being carried out within deadline
- Manage cash flow planning and forecasting
- Review of costing computation and ensure being properly computed
- Prepare management reports and financial analysis
Payroll Management
- Oversee and process monthly payroll accurately and on time
- Ensure correct calculation of salaries, overtime, commissions, bonuses, and statutory deductions
- Prepare and submit payroll-related statutory returns (PAYE, social contributions, pension, etc.) within deadlines
- Maintain proper payroll records and ensure confidentiality
- Reconcile payroll accounts and ensure proper posting into the accounting system
- Liaise with HR and management regarding payroll queries and employee matters
- Ensure compliance with labour laws and company policies
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and internal policies
- Prepare and submit VAT, corporate tax, and other statutory returns
- Liaise with external auditors, tax advisors, banks, and regulatory authorities
- Strengthen and monitor internal control systems
- Assist during internal and external audits
Retail Financial Oversight
- Supervise reconciliation of showroom sales, tills, and POS transactions
- Oversee daily banking processes and ensure timely deposits
- Monitor inventory accounting, margins, and cost controls
- Oversee petty cash management across locations
Leadership & Support
- Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff
- Assist in preparation of budgets and financial forecasts
- Identify financial risks and recommend corrective actions
- Support Management with financial insights for strategic decision-making
- Keep Management informed of unusual financial matters requiring attention
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- ACCA/ACA or equivalent professional qualification (completed or in progress preferred)
- Minimum 5–8 years’ experience in accounting, including payroll management
- Experience in retail sector will be an advantage
