Provide vigilant, professional aquatic safety supervision across the resort's beach, pools, and water recreation areas while maintaining the highest standards of guest service befitting a luxury St. Regis property.
Primary Responsibilities
Water Safety & Surveillance
- Maintain constant, vigilant surveillance of all designated swimming areas including pools, beach, and lagoon
- Monitor guest activities and water conditions to prevent accidents and identify potential hazards
- Recognize and respond immediately to emergency situations including drowning, injuries, and medical emergencies
- Perform water rescues using appropriate techniques and equipment
- Administer first aid, CPR, and emergency oxygen as required
- Coordinate with emergency medical services when necessary
- Maintain rescue readiness at all times during duty hours
Guest Safety & Education
- Enforce pool and beach safety rules with diplomacy and professionalism
- Inform guests about water conditions, currents, marine life, and potential hazards
- Provide safety briefings and swimming guidelines to guests, especially children
- Monitor weather conditions and advise on safe swimming times
- Communicate flag warning systems (green, yellow, red) clearly to guests
- Educate guests about coral reef protection and marine conservation
- Guide guests on safe lagoon entry/exit points and underwater hazards
Luxury Guest Service
- Welcome guests with warm Mauritian hospitality and professional demeanor
- Provide beach and pool service including setting up loungers, umbrellas, and towels
- Assist guests with water sports equipment and provide basic instruction
- Respond to guest requests promptly and courteously
- Maintain awareness of VIP guests and provide elevated service as appropriate
- Answer questions about water activities, local marine life, and resort amenities
- Anticipate guest needs while maintaining primary focus on safety
Equipment & Facility Management
- Conduct daily inspection of rescue equipment (rescue tubes, backboards, AED, first aid kits, oxygen)
- Ensure all safety equipment is properly maintained and readily accessible
- Test water quality (pool chemistry - pH, chlorine levels) and report results
- Maintain cleanliness of pool and beach areas
- Set up and arrange beach furniture and shade structures
- Ensure proper storage and maintenance of water sports equipment
- Report maintenance issues, safety hazards, or equipment malfunctions immediately
Environmental & Water Monitoring
- Assess daily ocean and lagoon conditions (currents, waves, visibility, temperature)
- Monitor tidal patterns and weather forecasts
- Identify and communicate presence of marine life (jellyfish, sea urchins, etc.)
- Remove debris and hazards from swimming areas
- Maintain awareness of coral reef boundaries and protected areas
- Support environmental conservation initiatives
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete incident reports for all accidents, injuries, and rescues
- Maintain accurate daily logs of weather, water conditions, and guest counts
- Document equipment checks and maintenance activities
- Report any safety concerns or unusual incidents to supervisors
- Record water quality test results
- Participate in accident investigations as required
Team Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with other lifeguards during shift changes
- Coordinate with recreation team, beach attendants, and water sports staff
- Support colleagues during emergencies and high-volume periods
- Attend daily briefings and safety meetings
- Participate in ongoing training and skill development programs
Required Qualifications
Certifications (Essential)
- Current Lifeguard Certification from recognized body (Red Cross, RLSS, Ellis & Associates, or equivalent)
- CPR for Professional Rescuers certification
- First Aid certification (minimum Basic Life Support)
- AED (Automated External Defibrillator) certification
- Oxygen Administration certification preferred
- Certifications must be valid and current; re-certification required as needed
Additional Certifications (Preferred)
- Advanced Open Water Lifeguard certification
- Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
- Waterfront lifeguarding or surf rescue training
- Marine first aid specialist
- Spinal injury management
Experience
- Minimum 1-2 years lifeguarding experience required
- Ocean/beach lifeguarding experience highly preferred
- Luxury hotel or resort experience advantageous
- Experience with international clientele beneficial
Language Requirements
- English: Fluent (essential)
- French: Fluent or conversational
- Additional languages valued

Technical Skills
- Expert swimming ability with strong endurance (able to swim 400m continuously)
- Proficiency in all rescue techniques (reaching, throwing, wading, swimming rescues)
- Advanced water rescue skills including unconscious victim rescue
- Strong underwater swimming and diving capabilities
- Knowledge of spinal injury management and immobilization
- Ability to perform CPR for extended periods
- Understanding of ocean dynamics, currents, and weather patterns specific to Mauritius
- Knowledge of tropical marine life and associated hazards
