A Recreation Coordinator plans, organizes, and oversees recreational activities and programs for various groups including children, adults, seniors, or specific communities. This role focuses on creating engaging experiences that promote physical activity, social interaction, and overall wellbeing.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Program Planning & Development

  • Design and implement diverse recreation programs and activities based on community needs and interests
  • Develop seasonal activity schedules including sports, arts and crafts, fitness classes, special events, and cultural programs
  • Create age-appropriate programs for different demographic groups
  • Research and introduce new activities to keep programming fresh and engaging
  • Establish program goals, objectives, and expected outcomes

Activity Coordination & Implementation

  • Lead and facilitate daily recreational activities and events
  • Organize tournaments, competitions, workshops, and special events
  • Coordinate equipment, supplies, and facility usage for programs
  • Manage activity registrations and participant rosters
  • Ensure smooth execution of all scheduled programs

Participant Engagement & Safety

  • Supervise participants during activities ensuring their safety and enjoyment
  • Provide instruction and guidance for various recreational activities
  • Foster positive, inclusive environment for all participants
  • Monitor participant behavior and address conflicts or concerns
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and emergency procedures
  • Maintain appropriate staff-to-participant ratios

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain accurate program records, attendance logs, and incident reports
  • Manage program budgets and track expenses
  • Order and maintain inventory of recreational equipment and supplies
  • Prepare activity reports and evaluations
  • Handle registrations, fees, and payment processing
  • Respond to inquiries and communicate with participants and families

Staff & Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, train, and supervise recreation staff and volunteers
  • Schedule staff for programs and activities
  • Conduct staff meetings and provide ongoing guidance
  • Evaluate staff performance

Facility Management

  • Inspect and maintain recreation areas, equipment, and facilities
  • Coordinate facility setup and breakdown for activities
  • Report maintenance needs and safety hazards
  • Ensure facilities meet health and safety standards

Marketing & Community Outreach

  • Promote programs through various channels
  • Build relationships with community organizations and stakeholders
  • Gather participant feedback to improve programming
  • Represent the organization at community events

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma with relevant experience may be considered

Certifications

  • CPR and First Aid certification (often required)
  • Lifeguard certification (if aquatic programs involved)
  • Additional certifications in specific activities (fitness, sports coaching) beneficial

Experience

  • 1-3 years’ experience in recreation programming or related field
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred
