Purpose and Objective of the Role

Greenpeace Africa is seeking a Communications Consultant based in Mauritius who will contribute to increasing the organisation’s visibility and influence through both traditional media and digital communications and engagement. The consultant will play a key role in connecting Greenpeace Africa’s campaigns with Mauritian audiences, translating complex environmental issues into compelling stories, and strengthening relationships with national media and key stakeholders.

This position is suited for a junior communications professional with some experience, strong writing skills, and a good understanding of the Mauritian media landscape. 

Main Duties

A. Media Relations and Public Communications

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with journalists and editors across Mauritian media.

  • Maintain and regularly update a comprehensive media contact database.

  • Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, statements and opinion articles.

  • Proactively pitch stories to media outlets and coordinate interviews with Greenpeace Africa spokespersons.

  • Organise media briefings, press conferences, and journalist engagement opportunities.

  • Monitor media coverage and identify opportunities to position Greenpeace Africa as a leading voice on environmental issues.

B. Content Development and Storytelling

  • Produce communications materials supporting Greenpeace Africa campaigns, including: Press releases; Blog articles; Q&A documents; Talking points; Campaign briefs & Supporter emails

  • Translate complex environmental and climate issues into accessible and compelling stories.

  • Highlight local perspectives and community voices connected to Greenpeace Africa’s campaigns.

  • Support the development of human-interest stories that resonate with Mauritian audiences.

C. Digital Communications and Engagement

  • Create communications for digital platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok and LinkedIn.

  • Support the creation and coordination of digital content such as short videos, graphics and social media posts.

  • Amplify campaign work and media coverage through digital channels to increase reach and engagement.

  • Contribute to supporter engagement initiatives and online mobilisation campaigns.

  • Feed into Digital and Comms strategies and tactics to further our campaigns in Mauritius.

D. Monitoring and Reporting

  • Conduct regular monitoring of Mauritian media coverage related to environmental issues and Greenpeace Africa campaigns.

  • Produce monthly reports on media coverage, communications outputs and digital engagement.

  • Provide insights on media trends, opportunities and potential risks within the Mauritian media landscape.

  • Do the above for digital impact, reach and use insights to inform future approaches.

E.Internal Coordination

  • Work closely with Greenpeace Africa’s Communications, Campaign and Engagement/Digital teams.

  • Ensure consistency of messaging and alignment with Greenpeace Africa’s broader communications strategy.

  • Support coordination between communications, digital engagement and campaign teams to maximise campaign visibility.

 Objective and Expected Deliverables

The objective of this consultancy is to strengthen Greenpeace Africa’s public visibility and communications impact in Mauritius by:

  • Building strong relationships with Mauritian media.

  • Producing high-quality communications materials supporting Greenpeace Africa campaigns.

  • Supporting digital communications and public, supporter engagement.

  • Ensuring Greenpeace Africa’s campaigns are communicated clearly and effectively within the Mauritian context.

The Communications Consultant will be expected to deliver:

  • Regular press releases and media materials supporting Greenpeace Africa campaigns.

  • Media outreach and journalist engagement activities.

  • Monthly media monitoring and communications reports.

  • Digital content for Greenpeace Africa platforms.

  • Support for media events, briefings and campaign communications moments.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies or a related field.

  • 2–4 years of experience in communications, journalism, public relations or digital communications.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Mauritian media landscape.Excellent writing and storytelling. 

  • Ability to translate complex environmental issues into clear and engaging communication.

  • Experience with social media and digital communication tools.

  • Excellent written and spoken French and English.

  • Working knowledge of Mauritian Creole is highly desirable.ong organisational and coordination abilities.

  • Experience working with NGOs, advocacy organisations or environmental campaigns.

  • Experience supporting communications for public campaigns, events or launches.

  • Basic photography or video production skills.

Duration and Scope of Work

  • This consultancy will run for a period of 6 months.

  • The consultant will work on an hourly basis. The total of work hours will not exceed 40 hours a week, ​but could be extended depending on the workload. The payment will be adjusted according to the work hours spent weekly, and will be approved by the Director of Communications  on a monthly  basis.

  • The consultant will provide regular reports on activities and outputs as agreed with the Communications Director and the Head of Digital.
