The Operating Theatre Manager reports to the Head of Medical Services, the role ensures high-quality nursing care through compliance, monitoring, and teamwork. The candidate will also oversee capacity building, mentoring, and training within a multidisciplinary quality framework.

 

The OT Manager will report to the Head of Medical Services, the selected candidate will be responsible for coordinating improved quality nursing care by ensuring compliance to professional and ethical practice.  He / She will also be responsible for monitoring and ensuring that nursing care and service delivery is implemented and practiced within a multi-disciplinary quality assurance team. The selected candidate will be accountable for coordinating capacity building, mentoring and training.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Accountability for operational excellence under financial management.
  • Manage HR costs in such a way as to ensure cost effective quality care including overtime and on call staff.
  • Assist the Biomedical Engineer in the control of asset register in Theatre.
  • Manage all costs emanating from the Theatre.
  • Order stock from preferred suppliers and conduct cycle counts for all stock including consignmen
  • Ensure accurate charging and billing
  • Evaluate equipment lifespan versus risk and development of capital expenditure budget
  • Complete capex equipment budget, compile annual capex budget as per Theatre and Doctor requirement
  • Perform strategic planning and set objectives to ensure that operational requirements are met including quality patient care
  • Assess objectives in line with the staff performance appraisal process to monitor progress
  • Organise Theatre to ensure a safe therapeutic environment and adherence to WHO theatre safety.
  • Ensure all categories of staff in Theatre implement Theatre policies and procedures as per CHKS
  • Plan and organise staffing including duty hours, time keeping and leave planning as per Sicorax timekeeping system.
  • Review and maintenance of policy and procedures in line with CHKS
  • Identify quality improvement opportunities and ensure appropriate strategy and quality improvement initiatives are developed and measured
  • Monitor safety standards and report all accidents and incidents (CQI) to Line Manager / Safety Representatives
  • Ensure adherence to infection control principles and complete monthly audits
  • Ensure the unit is providing safe, cost effective quality patient care in line with the Clinical Governance strategy and evidence-based practice
  • Evaluate nursing quality indicators and clinical outcomes
  • Implement group quality initiatives
  • Motivate and maintain a positive customer service orientation with all employees
  • Obtain necessary information from sales representatives and ensure product demonstration
  • Liaise with sales representatives with regards to the new products and equipment and arrange in service training for staff on new products and equipment
  • Assist with Theatre bookings, preparation of patients for procedures patient recovery, CSSD etc
  • Ensure daily procedures are in place and adhered to i.e emergency trolley, scheduled drugs, waste disposal etc
  • Manage emergency care by prioritising cases, checking of equipment and mock resuscitations
  • Ensure achievement of goals as set out in the Operating Theatre and Infection Control Committee
  • Actively participate as a member of a team to achieve goals
  • Create an environment where employees are aware of the role, they play in the provision of quality nursing care and their value to the organisation
  • Liaise with Learning & Development Department to ensure appropriate nursing training for the delivery of quality car
  • Facilitate a culture that is supportive of talent management and the initiation of required implementations to hone nursing talent
  • Enforce employee dress code within and on leaving the hospital
  • Promote staff wellbeing
  • Maintain customer satisfaction through building relationships with doctors, nursing employees and suppliers

Key Skills and Competencies 

Qualifications

Formal education required for competence in the job

Diploma in General Nursing or Diploma in Operating Room Science or equivalent.

Experience

Minimum 2-4 years of experience in OT Management.

Knowledge & Technical Competencies

Registrations, Affiliations, Professional Certifications

- Strong understanding of operating theatre workflows, surgical procedures, infection control, and patient safety standards.

- Proficient in OT scheduling, resource allocation, and coordination of multidisciplinary surgical teams.

- Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, equipment management, and sterilisation processes.

- Ability to interpret clinical data, track KPIs, and drive quality improvement initiatives.

- Familiarity with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards.

- Competent in incident reporting, risk management, and implementation of corrective actions.

- Strong understanding of healthcare quality standards, accreditation frameworks, and regulatory compliance.

- Proficiency in health service planning, data-driven decision making, and use of oncology-related information systems.
