Desmos Underwriting Limited is a dynamic and forward-thinking underwriting firm delivering specialized insurance solutions globally. We are seeking a Chief Underwriter to lead our Property and Operational Energy portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
You will act as the technical authority for the company, managing risk accumulation and driving profitability across commercial property, heavy industry, and power generation sectors in these emerging markets.
The ideal candidate will have 10–15 years of experience with a strong track record of underwriting complex property and energy risks in Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
1. Portfolio Strategy & Leadership
* Develop and execute the underwriting strategy for Commercial Property and Operational Energy (Power, Utilities, Oil & Gas, Renewables).
* Define risk appetite, line sizes, and pricing frameworks specifically for high-growth markets in SE Asia, Africa, MENA, and LATAM.
* Monitor portfolio accumulation, particularly regarding Natural Catastrophe (NatCat) exposure in the target regions.
2. Technical Underwriting
* Lead the risk assessment and pricing for complex accounts, including:
* Commercial Property: Industrial all-risks, mega-risks, and business interruption.
* Operational Energy: Power generation (thermal, hydro, solar, wind) and downstream energy assets.
* Review and approve technical referrals that exceed standard authority limits.
* Oversee policy wording to ensure it adequately addresses regional legal nuances and specific energy-related clauses.
3. Market Development
* Utilize existing networks with brokers and cedants in the target regions to generate deal flow in the Property and Energy sectors.
* Identify market gaps in the energy transition sector (e.g., renewable energy projects in Africa or SE Asia) and position Desmos as a lead market.
4. Operations & Team Management
* Mentor the underwriting team on the technical nuances
* Collaborate with claims teams to analyze loss trends in specific geographies and adjust underwriting guidelines accordingly.
Candidate Requirements
Experience & Education:
* 10 – 15 years of underwriting experience, with specific expertise in Onshore Energy (Power/Downstream) and Commercial Property.
* Mandatory Regional Experience: Proven track record of managing risks in Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
* Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Finance, or related field.
* Professional certifications (ACII, FCII, CPCU) are highly preferred.
Technical Skills:
* Deep understanding of operational risks, including machinery breakdown, business interruption (BI), and contingent BI.
* Regional Insight: Knowledge of regional NatCat models and local compliance requirements in the target territories.
* Analytical Ability: Proficiency in analyzing engineering reports and survey data to determine risk quality.
