Manager- Tax

The incumbent will be responsible for effectively managing the tax team, collaborating cross-functionally with other departments, and advancing the company’s business objectives through operational excellence.

 

Tax Compliance & Reporting: 

  • Prepare annual client tax portfolio planning, delegation of work, schedule reviews and sign off and complete submission of deliverables. 

  • Oversee the preparation and timely filing of all direct and indirect tax returns (e.g., Corporate Tax, VAT, Withholding Tax, etc.). 

  • Ensure timely submission of tax filings including VAT, PAYE, and corporate tax. 

  • Maintain accurate tax records and documentation for audit and statutory purposes. 

  • Monitor changes in tax legislation and ensure compliance with updated regulations. 

  • Manage quarterly (e.g. Advance Payment System (”APS”) returns and annual tax provisions. 

Tax Planning & Strategy  

  • Develop and implement effective tax planning strategies to optimize the company’s tax position while ensuring compliance. 

  • Provide strategic tax advice on business transactions, including M&A, investments, and restructuring. 

  • Develop and present tax advisory reports and recommendations. 

Audits & Assessments: 

  • Represent clients during tax audits, investigations, and disputes with the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA). 

  • Prepare responses to tax queries, assessments, and objections. 

  • Coordinate with legal counsel and external consultants for litigation support. 

  • Develop strategies to resolve tax disputes and minimize exposure. 

  • Maintain records of ongoing investigations and ensure timely follow-up. 

  • Advise clients on risk mitigation and compliance strategies to avoid future disputes. 

Transfer Pricing: 

  • Ensure compliance with transfer pricing regulations, including documentation, benchmarking studies, and inter-company agreements. 

  • Liaise with group entities on cross-border transactions and align global tax practices. 

Training: 

  • Develop customised tax training programs for clients and support the Senior Manager and Associate Director in delivering the sessions. 

Team Management & Coordination: 

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of tax professionals. 

  • Share regular performance feedback with team members and organize training where relevant to upskill staff members and fill in competency gaps. 

  • Collaborate with internal departments such as finance, legal, and operations on tax-related matters. 

  • Manage relationships with external tax consultants, advisors, and auditors. 

  • Stay updated with local and international tax developments. 

  • Prepare monthly management reports for the tax department (including key business metrics and KPI monitoring). 

Requirements and skills 

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or related field. CA, CPA, or equivalent tax qualification preferred. 

  • 57 years of relevant experience in taxation, preferably in a corporate or consulting environment. 

  • Strong knowledge of local and international tax regulations, including corporate tax and indirect tax. 

  • Proficient in tax software and ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle). 

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 

  • Good understanding of financial accounting principles. 

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly. 

  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. 

  • Experience in dealing with tax authorities and handling tax litigation or dispute resolution. 

  • Familiarity with international tax concepts (e.g., BEPS, OECD guidelines) is a plus.
