JOB DESCRIPTION

  Reporting to:             Head of Campus Life

 

 

 

 Overall Purpose:      

 

 As a key member of a dedicated team of student support, you will play a vital role in guiding students through various aspects of university life by providing holistic support throughout their academic journey and beyond. You will provide clear, accurate advice on academic pathways within the framework of university regulations. You will also offer up-to-date information on student visas.

 

 As a Student Advisor, you will provide empathetic and practical support to students facing personal or academic challenges, connecting them with specialist resources and guiding them through complex situations to ensure their success and re-engagement with their studies; additionally, you will support undergraduate and postgraduate students in career exploration, internship acquisition, and accessing employment opportunities while cultivating strong networks with employers and serving as the primary point of contact for Middlesex University Mauritius Campus alumni, fostering ongoing engagement within the university community.

 

  Principal Duties:

 

  • Serve as the first point of contact for student queries (by mail, telephone, email, and face to face).
  • Provide empathetic and pragmatic support to students facing academic, financial, and personal challenges, guiding them through available interventions and resources, and ensuring they feel safe and supported.
  • Ensure interactions are documented appropriately and students receive timely, clear, and engaging communication.
  • Interpret and clarify University and programme regulations, advising on academic options such as course transfers, study breaks, and continuation.
  • Deliver advice on immigration matters, including students and visas, and provide guidance on visa extension processes.
  • Provide student status letters when requested, in line with current Middlesex University guidelines.
  • Organize SMS messages to be sent to students in liaison with the Head of Campus Life.
  • Support the Head of Campus Life in the planning and delivery of campus-based employer engagement activities—such as careers fairs, skills workshops, presentations, and roadshows—while promoting part-time and graduate employment opportunities through appropriate channels.
  • Work closely with the Head of Campus Life to plan and deliver campaigns that will improve our graduate career outcomes, specifically for the post-15-month graduates.
  • Support the Head of Campus Life in developing and implementing strategies to enhance alumni engagement, including the coordination and facilitation of alumni events such as reunions
  • Maintain and regularly update accurate alumni records, including contact details, engagement history, employment status, career progression, success stories, and case studies, ensuring a comprehensive and up-to-date alumni database.
  • Represent the Head of Campus Life whenever necessary, particularly during their absence due to annual leave or when they are attending external meetings. etc.
  • The above list is not exclusive or exhaustive and working as part of the Campus Life team. The postholder will be expected to work closely with all members of the team, provide cover and assistance when necessary, and participate within the team as requested in such areas as communication and general office organisation. Other duties and projects will be added as required by the Chief Operating Officer.

  

 Flexibility: Please note that given the need for flexibility in order to meet the changing requirements, the duties of this post and the role of the post holder may be changed after consultation.

 Essential Education/Qualification

 

 

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Willingness to undertake training and/or certification to ensure appropriate knowledge mix within the team.

 

 

Desirable experience:

 

 

 

  • Understanding of the student journey to develop agile and modern initiatives to transform students’ lives.
  • At least five years’ experience working in a British University in a student focused service.

 

 

 

Essential skills:

 

 

 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and negotiation skills including presentation and report writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as a passionate approach to delivering excellent customer service.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly and in a student-centred manner, while effectively engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, academic staff, and industry professionals.
  • Excellent organisational skills including the ability to make decisions or recommendations.
  • Ability to prioritise work and work with a high level of autonomy to meet demanding deadlines.
  • Ability to work with people in distress and remain calm and compassionate.
  • Excellent knowledge of IT technology, including word processing, databases and spreadsheets and web-based resources and interfaces
