Job Brief

Exciting opportunity to work on conservation projects run the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation

Multidisciplinary with fauna, flora, and Ecotours

The work involves a specialisation in one department with exposure to the work of other departments.

Collaborating with a dynamic Field team from various backgrounds

Practical and theoretical training in species conservation

Paid internship with appropriate work tools and equipment

Skills acquired

  • Monitoring of bird movements and behaviours contributing to scientific research.
  • Identifying individuals with leg rings, developing skills in bird identification and ringing techniques.
  • Provision of supplementary food to our endemic birds.
  • Conducting nursery work, working with and learning about different plant species.
  • Collecting plant materials and propagation using various techniques contributing to habitat restoration efforts.
  • Control of invasive plant species to maintain healthy ecosystems.
  • Learning about guided tours, how to interact with visitors, sharing knowledge and enthusiasm for birds and plants.
  • Contributing to collection and analysis of data related to bird populations, plant growth, and habitat restoration efforts.
  • Exposure to the Education programme working with communities.

Requirements

  • Mauritian.
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Lives in Grand Port, Plaine Wilhems and Black River will be a significant advantage.
  • SC as Minimum qualification with experience: HSC is preferred.
  • Experience / proven interest as a nature lover.
  • Can work outdoors in all conditions.
  • Physically active.
  • Good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Good time management.
  • Good observation skills.

Location

Mauritian Wildlife Foundation conservation sites.

Conditions

Remuneration: Market rate stipend

Equipment provided: 3 shirts, 2 pairs of trousers, 1 pair of boots, 1 hat and 1 raingear

Duration

Posts for conservationist trainees are for 12 months with possibility of pursuing a career as a conservationist after the internship.

The MWF is the pioneer and the largest non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Mauritius whose mission is to save endemic Mauritian and Rodriguan Fauna and Flora, undertake research and implement programmes to restore and manage the ecosystem, share the results with the public and protect the native species’ future.
