Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Legal Assistant is a member of the Legal and Compliance Department, working under the supervision of the Senior Legal Advisor. The role is focused on the Department's core legal matters – principally contract review and legal research – together with a general legal administration component. The Legal Assistant also assists, under supervision, with trademark registrations and data protection registrations, and is responsible for maintaining the Department's relevant registers.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


1. Contract Review and Legal Research


Assist the Legal and Compliance Department in:

•        Reviewing and vetting a range of commercial contracts, letters, and documents of a legal nature, and flagging issues for the attention of the Senior Legal Advisor.

•        Conducting legal research on matters affecting the Group and preparing clear, well-supported research notes.

•        Drafting letters, documents, contracts, and templates of a legal nature, and filing accordingly while maintaining confidentiality on all work prepared.

•        Staying up to date with legislative amendments and circulating such amendments across the Group where relevant.

•        Filing and keeping an up to date record of gazetted laws and regulations.


2. Trademark and Data Protection


Assist the Legal and Compliance Department in, under the supervision of the Senior Legal Advisor:

•        Preparing and processing trademark registration and renewal applications.

•        Preparing and processing data protection registrations and notifications.

•        Maintaining accurate and up to date records of all trademark and data protection filings.


3. Planning and Organizing

•        Maintain the Group's contracts register.

•        Maintain the Group's litigation register and schedule all associated tasks and events.

•        Maintain such other registers as are relevant to the Legal and Compliance Department's work.

•        Communicate any relevant documents to external legal advisors.


4. Administration

•        Coordinate and schedule meetings on behalf of the Legal and Compliance Department, including the booking of meeting rooms.

•        Process purchase orders for the Department and follow up on the payment of legal fees and related invoices.

•        Respond to inquiries in person and by telephone.

•        Ensure that all legal files are properly up to date and compiled with all relevant documents.

•        Proofread legal documents.

•        Attending meetings to assist the Legal and Compliance department.


5. Any other cognate duties as may be necessary in the circumstances and/or required by the employer.


Qualifications Required:

•        A Law degree (LLB) from a reputable institution.

•        1 year's experience in a similar position.
