Job Description

Role Scope: Site-based role supporting animal welfare activities across our sites, with regular collaboration with Animal Welfare and Compliance Manager, Veterinary Services, Site Management, Operations, supervisors and animal care teams.

  • Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the coordination and implementation of animal welfare compliance activities on our sites under the direction of the Animal Welfare and Compliance Manager.
  • Assist in implementing welfare work programs, procedures and action plans in line with company requirements, client expectations and approved protocols.
  • Work with Production team, Veterinarians, Site Management, supervisors and technicians to support consistent animal welfare processes and practical welfare improvements.
  • Monitor animal health, behaviour, enrichment, socialisation and wellbeing indicators within veterinary, breeding, production and research-related processes, and report concerns promptly.
  • Escalate animal welfare concerns, incidents, adverse trends, non-conformances and urgent observations through the appropriate reporting channels, and support follow-up actions until closure.
  • Apply approved animal welfare and research procedures conscientiously while promoting occupational safety, animal health, biosafety and overall wellbeing of the animal population.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of behaviour management standards, scoring tools, digital records, databases, dashboards and reporting systems.
  • Conduct routine behaviour observations and welfare assessments during acclimation, care, housing, handling and preparation for environmental or operational changes.
  • Record, analyse and communicate welfare observations, welfare KPIs, performance indicators and trends to support timely decisions and continuous improvement.
  • Support the development, review and implementation of behavioural management plans, policies, SOPs, guides, checklists, forms, training materials and competency support tools.
  • Provide practical training, mentoring and on-the-job coaching to staff on behaviour assessment, enrichment, socialisation and welfare-related practices.
  • Assist in maintaining training records, supporting competency follow-up and identifying practical training needs related to animal welfare practices.
  • Prepare routine reports, summaries and records on welfare activities, behaviour observations, training, incidents, corrective actions, KPIs and program performance.

Qualification and Experience Requirements

  • HSC, diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Biological Science, Animal Science, Animal Behaviour, Zoology or a related discipline.
  • OR a Diploma in Nursing or related studies with valid registration with the relevant Nursing Council / regulatory body and a current practicing licence.
  • Previous experience with NHP behaviour management, enrichment and socialisation is preferred.
  • Holder of a valid driving license or has an own means of transport.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide patient care.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and under pressure.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and attention to detail
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to manage time and prioritise tasks efficiently.
  • Demonstrates integrity, confidentiality, professionalism and respect when handling information, operational issues and client-related requirements.
