Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following is a non-exhaustive list of duties:

  • To research and analyse the law on complex issues and writing briefs for submission to a supervising lawyer.
  • To synthesize legal research and analysis into a coherent written memorandum or brief for submission to a client, court or arbitrator.
  • To appear in a court or other litigation, arbitration or dispute resolution forums.
  • To analyse and summarize complicated legal documents, including contracts, and suggesting alterations to those documents.
  • To perform discovery of various electronically stored data and hard copies of information in preparation for litigation.
  • To negotiate with outside parties on contractual issues and legal disputes, including settlement conferences.
  • To anticipate and mitigating potential legal problems within the law firm or for a client — and developing strategies to avoid costly litigation and reduce potential areas of risk.
  • To supervise the work and operations of the paralegals/legal secretaries.
  • To ensure the internal company processes and SKUs (relative to legal matters) are followed.
  • To document, and implement required processes.
  • To ensure that the cases/projects are delivered on a timely basis to the required quality.
  • To ensure the case management/document management are properly and accurately filled.
  • To participate in the business development process. This may include producing development materials, project proposals, and demonstration to customers, participation in project scoping and negotiations and more.
  • To deliver training on specific topic both to internal and external stakeholders.
  • To contribute to the research work/library with relevant body of knowledge.
  • To coach and review more junior members of the staff and ensure there are no single point of failures within the team.
  • To pro-actively reinforce customer service principles and mind client business.
  • To act as the service delivery manager for the legal services in the absence of the senior barrister.

    • To ensure work/tasks are efficiently distributed and completed on time
    • To ensure quality of the deliverable
    • To ensure all internal processes relevant to service delivery and project management are followed.
    • To perform any cognate duties relevant to this position as required by management.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This role will not have direct reporting lines, though will involve working and influencing other employees in parallel/matrix reporting lines.

Degree of Independence/Supervision

  • Requires minimal supervisions on the job. Independently works under broad supervision and can manage one owns time efficiently.
  • Follows principle of project and quality management.
  • Perform hierarchical escalation only in situation of exception.
  • Bachelor degree in Law/LLB or equivalent.
  • Qualification from the relevant bar council.
  • 4-7 years of experience as a barrister.

Qualifications and Experience

Skills

Essential technical skills required are:

  • Moderate to expert level in MS Office Suite.
  • Highly analytical and good research skill.
  • Experience in business process documentation methodologies.
  • Desired experience in project/process management methodologies.

This role will be based in a fast paced, fact changing start-up type environment and as such requires an individual with exceptional skills in the following:
