To provide safe, high-quality nursing care to patients while supervising and supporting nursing staff, ensuring compliance with healthcare standards, and contributing to the efficient operation

 

  • Key Responsibilities:
    • To provide all basic and advanced nursing care and prescribed treatment to patients.
    • To assist medical practitioners, physicians and surgeons.
    • To administer medicine and drugs.
    • To apply surgical dressings
    • To observe and report on the general conditions of patients.
    • To measure and record vital signs of patients
    • To perform diagnostic tests.
    • To collect specimens for inspection and pathological examinations.
    • To communicate all observations to Charge Nurse / Assistant Charge Nurse
    • To report immediately to Charge Nurse / Assistant Charge Nurse any emergency/ abnormality which may arise.
    • To keep records and reports in appropriate Books / files concerning the general conditions of patients, observations following prescribed treatment and nursing care and on any occurrence during duty.
    • To follow all prevailing procedures and adhere to all prevailing policies and standards
    • To keep all records according to prevailing procedures.
    • To act as Anesthetic Nurse / Runner / Scrub Nurse or Assistant to Surgeon during operation whenever required.
    • To perform any duties in relation to the Casualty service.
    • To assist the Charge Nurse in the job allocation of the team, in the follow up thereof, in the monitoring of the nursing care and prescribed treatment to patients and in the taking of appropriate corrective measures for the good running of the Nursing Department.

Special Instructions :

  • To carry out any activity as requested in connection with the personal hygiene and the welfare of patients (making of beds, care of pressure points, empty urine bags).
  • To admit patients – to interview the patient in the presence of his/her relative and record all relevant facts such as High Blood Pressure, Diabetes in the patient’s file.
  • To insert intravenous infusion.
  • To carry out intramuscular and intravenous injections.
  • To take delivery of prescribed Dangerous Drugs and Psychotropic Drugs from pharmacy through patient’s drug sheet and to administer to patient accordingly.
  • To accompany Charge Nurse / Assistant Charge Nurse and doctors during routine visits of patients.
  • To promptly inform treating doctors of any change / observation regarding their patients’ physical conditions and / or reactions to prescribed treatment and as and when receiving results of prescribed tests / examinations
  • To arrange for patient’s meals and drugs.
  • To ensure that the Emergency Trolley for drugs consumable items and apparatus is replenished in time.
  • To notify relatives when patient is due for discharge or transfer.
  • To prepare the required set of instruments & gowns to be used in operating theatres before proceeding to their sterilization whenever required.
  • Helping in the preparation of OT as well as the checking and the cleaning of all equipment and apparatus before and after operation whenever required. 
  • Ancillary Duties:

    • To prepare the necessary equipment for diagnostic tests (ECG, gastroscopy, colonoscopy, Stress Test etc.) and assist doctors when doing these tests.
    • To proceed to physical inventory of the room with patient / relatives on the patient’s admission and before his departure.
    • To fill in the patient’s drug sheet immediately after operation concerning all drugs/ medicines / consumable items administered/used during the surgical intervention, before sending copies to pharmacy and to cashier whenever required.
    • To carry out all basic and advanced nursing duties from admission to the discharge whenever required.
    • To order from the pharmacy through the patient’s Pharmacy sheet all medicines, drugs and consumable items to be administered to / used the patient.
    • To perform any other cognate duties as and when requested in the Nursing Department.
    • Qualifications/Skills:
    • A recognised nursing qualification — Diploma in General Nursing OR a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or equivalent) from an institution recognised by the relevant authorities.
    • Registration with the Nursing Council of Mauritius (or equivalent licensing/regulatory body) — valid licence to practice nursing.
    • Strong clinical nursing skills and up-to-date knowledge of nursing practices.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work under pressure and handle emergencies.
    • Good decision-making and critical-thinking skills.
    • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
    • Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and infection control standards.
    • Flexibility to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
